CalDigit Unveils New Waterproof “Tuff nano” USB-C SSDs with 1055MB/s Read Speeds
CalDigit has released its “Tuff nano” portable USB-C SSD today that offers IP67 dust and water resistance, up to 10Gbps speeds over USB 3.2 Gen 2, and more.
CalDigit is a maker of high-end, high-performance docks, dongles, and storage solutions—you may have seen some of their Thunderbolt 3 adapters at the Apple Store. But their latest creation isn’t an adapter for dongle laden MacBook Pro owners, it’s a rugged, portable solid-state drive that wants to compete with the likes of LaCie for photographers’ hearts.
As the name alludes to, the “Tuff nano” SSDs feature a protective rubber housing around a metal frame, akin to Lacie’s rugged external drives. This design offers a certified IP67 rating with the ability to be submerged under one meter of water for 30 minutes, as well as dust and shock resistance.
Inside there is a Toshiba M.2 NVMe SSD in a tiny enclosure that uses a USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gbps max) bus to transfer your files. It’s not Thunderbolt 3, but the theoretical max read and write speeds of this little guy are impressive all the same at 1055MB/s read and 900MB/s write, and although the drives come pre-formatted for macOS (HFS+), they will also work with ChromeOS, iPadOS, Linux and Windows devices.
The drives measure 7.59cm x 5.44cm x 1.45 cm (2.99in x 2.14in x 0.57in) and weigh just 74g (0.163lbs) and it comes in a variety of colors including charcoal black, olive green, royal blue, and tomato red.
The drive is currently only available in a 512GB storage configuration for $149.95.
