Cosina Announces the Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 50mm f/2 for Z-Mount Cameras
While its name and basic specifications match that of the Voigtländer APO-LANTHAR 50mm f/2 Aspherical lens for Sony E-mount (and M-mount), the company says the Nikon Z-mount version is all-new while retaining the same high-performance thanks to its apochromatic design.
APO-Lanthar is the title Cosina Voigtlander gives to high-performance products among its line, with outstanding imaging performance that was originally created in 1951. The base design of this particular lens dates back to at least two years ago, but since Cosina believes it to be one of its highest-performing standard lenses has been expanding the number of cameras the optical formula can be used on. Cosina says that the apochromatic design of the lens makes the on-axis chromatic aberration of red, green, and blue light as close to zero as possible and therefore makes for an optic with outstanding performance. The lens is compatible with full-frame Nikon Z-mount cameras (FX), but will also work on crop-sensor Z-mount cameras, albeit with a tighter frame of focus.
The manual lens is constructed of ten elements in eight groups, including two low-dispersion elements, two double-sided aspherical elements, and a floating element. It features a 12-blade aperture diaphragm, has an aperture range of f/2 through f/16 that’s adjusted with the knurled aperture ring, has a minimum focusing distance of 45cm, and uses a 52mm front filter thread. The lens is chipped for providing communication between the lens and camera body on compatible Z-mount cameras. In addition to enabling EXIF data, this also enables proper in-body image stabilization on compatible cameras, as well as support for the various focusing assist functions. This is all possible due to a licensing agreement Cosina has struck with Nikon that allowed it to develop and manufacture this unit.
