Sigma Announces the 100-400mm f/5-6.3 Contemporary for Fujifilm X-Mount

The 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS lens from Sigma will be available on Fujifilm X-mount, bringing the company’s total number of lenses for the format to six. The 100-400mm f/5.6-6.3 is Sigma’s second zoom lens for the Fujifilm X-mount, following the 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN.

The Sigma 100-400mm lens was built for full-frame cameras and was released in 2020 for Sony E and Leica L mounts. Sigma claims that it has done more than just convert it to X-mount; it has also introduced a control algorithm that is exclusive to Fujifilm’s APS-C cameras, including autofocus drive and communication speed improvement. As a result, the lens not only boasts high-speed autofocus, as the brand claims, but it also offers continuous autofocus (AF-C) and in-camera aberration correction.

The lens’s side switches have also been tuned for X-mount. According to Sigma, the “AF Function Setting Switch” allows photographers to pick a function while pressing the AF Function Button on the lens side.

The lens has a structure of 16 groups and 22 elements, including one FLD and four SLD elements, which, according to Sigma, are utilized to correct aberrations and distortions effectively. It has a nine-bladed aperture diaphragm and an aperture range of f/5 to f/29 (depending on zoom). It weighs 1,153 grams and has a wide-angle minimum focusing distance of 112 centimeters and a telephoto minimum focusing distance of 160 centimeters.

While the lens was created with full-frame sensors in mind, Sigma claims that it can also give extremely high performance on APS-C X-mount systems, most likely because the best sections of the lens – the center — are all that is necessary on the smaller sensor.

The Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary will be available for $949 beginning September 21. While it is slower, it is far less expensive than Fujifilm’s first-party 100-400mm f/14.5-5.6 lens, which costs $1,899.
