Canon Unveils the Ultra-Wide RF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM APS-C Lens
Canon has recently expanded its RF-S lens lineup, giving EOS R system APS-C photographers more alternatives. The RF-S 10-18mm zoom, which has a 35mm equivalent focal length of 16-29mm on Canon APS-C mirrorless cameras, is the fourth RF-S lens, joining the RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM, RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM, and RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM.
Canon claims that the ultra-wide focal length range is suitable for vlogging and creating selfie-style video material. In terms of photography, the lens should be suitable for landscape and travel photography.
Despite having the same focal length range as the older EF-S 10–18mm zoom lens, the new RF-S 10–18mm lens has a completely different optical architecture. There are twelve elements in the lens, including two UD lenses and an aspheric lens.
The RF-S 10–18mm lens is a lightweight and small zoom lens. When retracted, it weighs 150 grams and measures 44.9 millimeters in length. Canon claims that the zoom ring must be turned from its retracted position to 10mm, which is smoother than its other retracted lens designs.
The Canon EF-S 10–18mm f/4.5–5.6 IS STM lens, on the other hand, has a slightly quicker maximum aperture at its long end, weighs 240g, and is 72mm long. The EF-S lens has a 67mm front filter thread as well, however, the new RF-S 10–18mm lens has a 49mm thread.
The lens has image stabilization (IS), which is rated for four stops of stabilization when used alone and up to six stops with coordinated IS, which means that the lens’ IS technology works in tandem with the image stabilization on the camera body. It can also be utilized for handheld video filming with Movie Digital IS.
Canon claims that its new 10–18mm lens has less focus breathing when shooting video. Canon claims that the lens’s STM autofocus drive mechanism enables smooth and quiet autofocus.
