Meike’s long-awaited 85mm f/1.4 autofocus lens, which was unveiled in April, is now available for a relatively affordable $470. But, as expected, the promised RF help is unlikely to happen. Meike stated earlier this year that the 85mm f/1.4 autofocus lens would be available for Sony E, Nikon Z, Leica L, and Canon RF cameras. Only the Nikon Z and Sony E mounts are now available for purchase.

While it’s not surprising that Canon blocked Meike from selling an autofocus-equipped lens for its RF mount—Canon has been pursuing legal action against any third-party lens maker who attempts to sell a lens with RF autofocus support—it’s unclear why the L-mount has also been dropped.

“85mm f/1.4 is a high-resolution portrait shooting lens which can achieve high-resolution imaging in focus and soft background blurring out of focus, providing clear image for daily shooting. The lens is easy to carry and its images are sharp and clear at any aperture,” Meike writes. “The 85mm f/1.4 uses the newest optical structure, making it able to achieve a large aperture of f/1.4. Multi-layer coating technology is used on both sides of the lens to restore more realistic colors. The lens is not easy to attach dust or stains, and can be easily wiped clean.”

Meike’s lens is made up of 13 elements organized into eight sections. The company makes no mention of any unique lenses used in the formula to eliminate chromatic aberrations or other potential problems. It does have an aperture range of f/1.4 to f/16 thanks to a 12-bladed diaphragm.

The lens has a front filter thread size of 77mm, a minimum focusing distance of 0.98 meters, a diagonal angle of view of 28.9 degrees, a horizontal angle of view of 24.1 degrees, and a vertical angle of view of 16.1 degrees.

Meike claims that the optic’s stepping motor provides both silent and smooth autofocus operation. Furthermore, because it has an electronic connection with the attached camera, it supports electronic aperture adjustment (in addition to manual control via the aperture ring on the lens) and transmits EXIF data.
