Kodak Reduces Price of Tri-X 35mm Film by Up to 30%

Kodak Alaris has decreased the price of 35mm Tri-X black-and-white film by up to 30%, according to reports. Last week, Kodak Professional posted an Instagram Story announcing the reduction.

Tri-X is one of Kodak’s most prestigious films, having been introduced as a sheet film in 1940 and later as a 35mm and 120 film in 1954. It has subsequently become a popular among news and documentary photographers due to its adaptability and atmospheric grain. While traditional journalism has long switched to digital photography, Tri-X, a long-time photojournalist favorite, is still popular among niche journalists and documentarians.

The story read: “We have implemented a catalogue price reduction on 135 format Kodak Professional Tri-X 400 black & white negative film. Our two 135-format offerings will see up to a 30% reduction in price, depending on the region. Our expectation is that this lower price will be passed on by the retailers to photographers worldwide as inventories turn.”

Last week, Digital Camera World reported on the price cut, claiming that the film might be dropped in price from roughly $10 to $7 in the United States and from around £14 to less than £10 in the UK.

Kodak Alaris’ decision to cut the price of Tri-X comes after a series of price rises on Kodak-branded films since before the Covid epidemic. Kodak Alaris has exclusive rights to market Eastman Kodak photography films.

Recently, however, there have been signs of price reductions. In November of last year, Kodak Alaris announced a price reduction of up to 35% on some of its 120 size film products.

These price drops coincided with the arrival of a new “budget” 120-color film, Kodak Gold 200 120, in March 2022. The film was offered as a more affordable alternative to films like Portra 160 and 400.
