Viltrox Announces the AF 20mm f/2.8 Lens for Nikon Z-Mount
Last November, Viltrox introduced an autofocus 20mm f/2.8 lens for Sony E-mount. Today, the company announced that the lens will also be available in Nikon Z mount.
Its availability on Nikon Z really meets a more pressing need because that system is not as complete as Sony’s. Nikon offers a pancake 26mm f/2.8 and 28mm f/2.8 in terms of tiny size, and the 20mm f/1.8 fills the focal range, but there is nothing that comes in at that wide 20mm focal length in a super-small, economical form.
Nikon’s 20mm f/1.8 has a faster aperture but weighs 505 grams and measures 4.27 inches long. In comparison, the Viltrox 20mm f/2.8 weighs 173 grams (slightly more than the E-mount version, which weighs 157 grams) and is approximately 2.4 inches long. The Viltrox AF 20mm f/2.8 FE lens is made up of ten elements arranged into eight groups, including a pair of ED lens elements, two aspherical lenses, a high refractive index element, and what Viltrox calls its “HD Nano” multilayer coating.
Viltrox’s 20mm f/2.8 uses an STM motor that it describes as “noiseless” and “reliable.” Viltrox states that it is capable of fine focusing, enables eye AF, and has low latency and vibration. The business notes that the lens not only meets all autofocus requirements, but it also allows video shooting and works with a camera’s in-body image stabilization.
The Viltrox 20mm f/2.8 has a close-focusing distance of 7.5 inches and an aperture range of f/2.8 to f/16 via a seven-bladed diaphragm.
Here are some sample photographs shot with the lens using a Nikon Zf or Z7 II:
