Sony has previously demonstrated that moving full-frame does not always imply big and hefty equipment. The new Sony FE 24-50mm f/2.8 G is a lightweight and compact (440g, 74.8mm x 92.3mm) full-frame lens for Sony E cameras that features a continuous f/2.8 aperture, a physical aperture ring with a click switch, and a focus lock button.
The new 24-50mm standout feature is, without a doubt, its size.

The 24-50mm f/2.8 G has 16 lens elements organized into 13 groups. It includes four aspherical elements and two ED lens elements. In a pre-release briefing, Sony described the image quality as comparable to first-generation G Master lenses.

The Sony 24-50mm lens features both a physical aperture ring and an aperture click switch, allowing for seamless iris-pull pictures if necessary. In addition, there is a customisable focus hold button and an AF/MF switch. The lens features a 67mm front filter thread.

It can focus as close as 0.18 meters at 24mm when manually focusing (0.19 meters with autofocus) and 0.29 meters at 50mm in manual focus (0.3 meters with autofocus). This gives a maximum magnification of 0.33x with manual focus and 0.3x with autofocus.
The 24-50mm lens was developed with an internal focusing mechanism, which means that only the central groups of the optical system move when focused. The lens features two linear motors to provide rapid AF operation.

The FE 24-50mm has a dust and moisture-resistant design, and the front element has a fluorine coating to help prevent fingerprints, dust, water, oil, and other impurities.

Sony omitted optical stabilization from the lens to reduce its size and weight. The lens is compatible with the focus breathing compensation function (for cameras with this feature).
