Born in Los Angeles in 1939, Gibson’s journey into the world of photography began during his time in the United States Navy, where he served as a photographer’s mate.
After his military service, Gibson studied photography at the San Francisco Art Institute under the tutelage of the renowned photographer Dorothea Lange. It was during this period that he honed his craft and developed his signature black-and-white aesthetic, characterized by strong contrasts, bold compositions, and a keen eye for detail.
In the 1960s, Gibson moved to New York City, where he immersed himself in the vibrant artistic scene of the era. He soon ga
