DJI Introduces the New Avata 2 FPV Drone
The DJI Avata 2 is a small, agile drone developed for first-person view flying with goggles. The Avata 2 boasts more style, speed, and stamina than its predecessor, the original Avata, and costs less. It also has a larger image sensor than the original Avata, bringing the FPV drone series up to a Type 1/1.3-inch CMOS 12-megapixel image sensor with a greater dynamic range and better low-light performance. The drone’s ultra-wide lens offers a field of vision of 155 degrees, equivalent to a 12mm lens on a full-frame camera.
The drone can record SDR and HDR footage at up to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, as well as slow-motion video at 2.7K resolution and 100 fps. It also includes a 10-bit log video recording mode for drone pilots who want greater post-processing and color-grading freedom.
The camera’s shutter speed varies from 1/30s to 1/8000s for video and 1/50s to 1/8000s for still photography. Its ISO range is 100 to 25,600. However, the DJI Avata 2 only shoots JPEG still photographs and does not support RAW data.
The DJI Avata 2 has a longer battery life than its predecessor, allowing it to fly for 23 minutes. Due to improved battery life and increased speed, the new drone has a roughly three-kilometer longer range than the original Avata (the Avata 2 can fly at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour).
The DJI Avata 2 features five more degrees of gimbal tilt, a more aerodynamic design, 46GB of built-in storage, and video live-streaming at bitrates of up to 30 MB/s.
Additional useful changes include the new DJI Goggles 3 that come with it and allow first-person flight. Compared to previous DJI Goggles, the new ones include a built-in battery and GPS. The headset features two 1080p OLED screens, defogging capabilities, enhanced video transmission performance, more steady video, and outward-facing cameras for pass-through video.
The Avata 2 is piloted with a new DJI RC Motion 3 controller, including buttons, a joystick, and motion control. It features a two-stage trigger for throttle control, pre-programmed roll and flip buttons, and a recording button.
The DJI Avata 2 is currently available. The drone itself costs $489.
There’s also the $999 DJI Avata 2 Fly More Combo, which contains the drone, a new controller, and upgraded goggles. For even more flying enjoyment, the three-battery combo costs $1,200 and includes all of the same components as well as two additional batteries.
