Thypoch Unveils the Eureka 50mm f/2 Prime Lens for Leica M-Mount
Thypoch, a Chinese lens manufacturer famed for its Simera 28mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/1.4 lenses, has introduced its second lens line, Eureka. The first lens in the series is the Eureka 50mm f/2 prime lens for Leica M-mount cameras.
“Eureka 50mm f/2’s nod to historical craftsmanship not only awakens the imagination of those yearning for the golden era but does so with a modern twist that enhances usability without sacrificing quality or aesthetic appeal. Its compact design enhances convenience for on-the-go photography,” says Thypoch.
There’s a strong emphasis on combining historical appearance and flair with modern imaging performance. The lens seems like it came from the 1950s.
Although only available in M-mount for the time being, photographers can see from the Simera’s recent release on E, Z, and X mounts that Thypoch may eventually spread the Eureka lens outside M-mount. However, the company acknowledges lens mount adapters and states that the Eureka 50mm f/2 is compatible with the 44 x 33-millimeter image sensor in the Hasselblad CFV100C camera, ensuring image coverage throughout the whole 100-megapixel image sensor. That’s quite a large image circle.
The Eureka 50mm f/2 is particularly noteworthy for its design, which is a modern retelling of the 1953 Leica 50mm f/2 Summicron Collapsible lens. The lens has a minimum length of 27 millimeters and can expand to 41.2 millimeters.
Thypoch boasts edge-to-edge sharpness with its 50mm double gauss construction. The asymmetrical formula consists of six lens elements distributed among four groups, each divided into a distinct front and back part. The lens consists of a single ED glass element to correct chromatic aberrations and a high refractive index (HRI) element to battle field curvature and spherical aberration. Thypoch describes the lens as “sharp,” even when shot wide open at f/2.
The lens maker also promises excellent bokeh with a 12-blade aperture diaphragm. “[The] Eureka 50mm f/2 guarantees circular and aesthetically pleasing bokeh, creating a dreamy and poetic atmosphere,” Thypoch claims.

The Thypoch Eureka 50mm f/2 is now available in two different configurations. Aluminum-built lenses are lighter and less expensive. It weighs 120 grams and costs $579. There’s also a brass variant, which is darker and heavier. It weighs 230 grams and is available for $859.
