Fujifilm has announced a significant firmware upgrade for its X and GFX Series cameras, as well as news about the upcoming X Summit in Tokyo. The firmware upgrade is video-focused and includes a number of promising features and improvements. Fujifilm’s Yuji Igarashi, Divisional Manager of Fujifilm’s Professional Imaging Group, said that the firmware upgrade for the X-H2, X-H2S, and GFX100 II cameras is in the works in response to user input.

“We strive to enhance our products by making improvements and adding new features through firmware updates guided by the feedback we receive from our users,” Igarashi explains. “Recently, we’ve received comments especially on autofocus, to improve the performance.”

According to Igarashi, the impending firmware upgrade will improve subject tracking, face/eye detection, and video recording stability for the three impacted cameras, all of which are Fujifilm’s flagship models.

The upgrade will include two new video shooting options in addition to autofocus improvements. The first is F-Log2 C, which promises a broad color range. Furthermore, the cameras will provide timecode synchronization using ambient lockit devices over a wired connection, which will benefit some professional video operations. Igarashi claims that these changes, like the autofocus ones, have been greatly sought by users, particularly those working in high-end studio video setups.

The firmware updates will be available in November.
