Fujifilm Unveils the Fujinon XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II Lens
Along with the new Fujifilm X-M5 camera, Fujifilm introduced the Fujinon XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II, a significantly improved version of the company’s successful professional X Series standard zoom lens.
“XF 16-55mm has always been known as a workhorse; a must-have everyday carry lens for professionals and enthusiasts alike,” says Victor Ha, vice president of Fujifilm North America Corporation’s Electronic Imaging & Optical Devices Division. “XF 16-55mm II takes everything our fans loved about the original lens and elevates it to the next level by combining new lens optics, smooth aperture control, and enhanced autofocus, with nods to the reliable go-anywhere form factor that made the original lens such a hit.”
Fujifilm promises better optical performance. The XF 16-55mm f/2.8 Mark II has 16 lens elements grouped in 11 groups. These elements include four aspherical lenses, three ED lenses, and a Super ED element. The lens promises high resolution across the frame, increased corner performance, and superior control of chromatic aberrations. Fujifilm claims that the new lens, which features an 11-bladed aperture diaphragm, is substantially less prone to onion ring bokeh aberrations.
The new lens has an enhanced linear autofocus motor. Aside from this improvement, the motor has smaller, lighter glass to move, which helps. Essentially, autofocus is faster, smoother, and quieter, which Fujifilm claims makes the improved lens more suited for action photography and video recording.
Other video enhancements have occurred. The lens includes a new aperture de-click switch, which allows videographers to spin the aperture ring smoothly (and quietly). The optical design also promises to reduce focus breathing, ensuring a stable frame while focusing.
The new XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II lens weighs only 410 grams, representing a 37% weight reduction. The lens is also physically smaller, shrinking from 106 to 95 millimeters. The new zoom lens is also significantly narrower, accepting a 72mm filter instead of a 77mm one. Overall, there is a 38% drop in volume.
The Fujifilm Fujinon XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR II lens will be available in December for $1,199.95.
