Leica Unveils the Leica M Edition 70
Leica is commemorating 70 years of the Leica M with the production of a limited edition film camera, the Leica M Edition 70.
Leica today commemorated the 70th anniversary of their M camera series. The M series, which debuted in 1954 with the Leica M3, immediately became a dream for street photographers due to its distinctive rangefinder design and no-frills mechanical construction. To commemorate this milestone, Leica has released the Leica M Edition 70, a super-premium collector’s edition camera.
Only 250 copies of the camera will be created, and each will be personally numbered. The body design is based on the classic M3, with parts of the Leica M-A, but it has a platinum-plated metallic outer shell, referring to a 70th anniversary as a platinum jubilee.
A brief look at the camera body conveys a sense of timelessness.”The combination of timeless design and tried-and-tested craftsmanship, and luxurious platinum coating makes the edition set a coveted item for discerning photographers and collectors,” Leica informs me.
The M version 70 comes with a special platinum version of the Leica APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH. The Leica M Edition 70 is a totally analog film camera with a simple ISO selection dial. It also includes a Leicavit M quick winder for easy use in fast-moving scenarios. A collector’s edition platinum film canister containing a roll of monochrome film completes the kit.
The Leica M Edition 70’s price is unusual. The collector’s set retails for $22,995. It will be available for purchase in 2025 at select Leica locations.
