Canon Unveils the RF 24mm f/1.4 L VCM Hybrid Lens
Canon introduced the RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM lens in June, referring to it as the first in a line of new hybrid primes. The RF 24mm f/1.4 L VCM and RF 50mm f/1.4 L VCM are the latest additions to the series.
The RF 24mm f/1.4 L VCM, like the RF 35mm and 50mm counterparts, is intended for hybrid content makers who will capture high-quality still images as well as professional videos. Canon claims that its new 24mm prime lens is ideal for professional photographers and videographers, including those who shoot journalism, portraits, landscapes, and create exciting movies with a wide-angle focal length.
The RF 24mm f/1.4 L VCM is Canon’s widest f/1.4 RF lens, as well as its widest-angle L series prime lens for mirrorless cameras.
The lens’ optical design includes 15 elements divided into 11 groups, including two UD lenses and an aspherical lens. The primary also contains Canon’s ASC (Air Sphere Coating), Super SSC (Super Spectra Coating), and SWC (Subwavelength Coating). The front element of the lens is fluorine coated to help protect it from water and oil. In terms of water, the lens is weather-resistant, as are all L lenses.
Although Canon does not mention astrophotography or the RF 24mm f/1.4 L VCM’s control of comatic aberrations, the fast aperture should appeal to astrophotographers who don’t mind a somewhat longer focal length than standard ultra-wide lenses.
The new RF 24mm f/1.4 L VCM, like the RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM, uses a mix of Canon’s Nano USM (ultrasonic motor) and VCM (Voice Coil Motor) autofocus technology, promising quick and quiet focusing. The lens focuses as close as 0.24 meters, with a maximum magnification of 0.17x.
The RF 24mm f/1.4 L VCM is the same size as the new RF 50mm f/1.4 L VCM and the old RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM, yet weighs approximately the same. The RF 24mm f/1.4 L VCM measures 99.3 millimeters long and weighs 515 grams.
All three lenses have a programmable iris ring for changing aperture while shooting, which works with compatible cameras such as the Canon EOS R1 and R5 Mark II. Older cameras can only use the aperture control ring for video.
The Canon RF 24mm f/1.4 L VCM will be available in stores in December for a suggested retail price of $1,499.
