Jeff Brouws: Just About Everything, Someplace Else
Robert Mann Gallery is thrilled to announce its return to Chelsea, the dynamic art hub we first joined in 1999.
For the opening exhibition in our new gallery space—and to celebrate over 25 years of collaboration with artist Jeff Brouws — Robert Mann Gallery proudly presents Jeff Brouws: Just About Everything, Someplace Else, on display from October 17 to December 6, 2024. This exhibit features a collection of Brouws’s most recognizable photographs alongside a selection of previously unseen works. In Just About Everything, Someplace Else, Jeff Brouws gathers images that serve as historical artifacts while addressing themes still relevant today: abandonment, isolation, disconnection, and the effects of technological shifts—all hinting at an American Dream that may not be quite as it appears.
This exhibition includes pieces from various series, including Brouws’s Language in the Landscape, inspired by Ed Ruscha, the haunting, Hopper-esque Approaching Nowhere, and works that explore the discarded and franchised aspects of our shared commercial spaces, reflecting and renewing the vision of the New Topographics movement. Throughout his career, Brouws has built an extensive archive focused on capturing the constructed environment—a practice he describes as “visual anthropology.” His photographs of the American landscape preserve traces of economic and social forces, particularly in non-urban areas. The highway, a recurring element in his work, serves as both backdrop and narrative thread, reflecting the pulse of American life.
About the Author
Jeff Brouws (b. 1955) is an American photographer who documents the cultural landscape of America through a “visual anthropology” lens. Over more than 30 years, his work has explored themes like the American highway, abandoned urban spaces, and the franchised landscape. Influenced by artists such as Ed Ruscha and the Bechers, Brouws captures the fading iconography of Americana, transforming derelict sites into reflections on collective memory and culture.
Self-taught and born in San Francisco, Brouws’s work is held in major collections, including those of the Whitney Museum, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and SFMOMA. He has exhibited extensively and published notable monographs, such as Approaching Nowhere (2006) and Readymades (2003)
