Michael Stipe (American, b. 1960) is a versatile artist, producer, and musician whose career spans over 40 years. Renowned as the iconic lead singer of R.E.M., a band that sold over 100 million albums worldwide, Stipe has left an indelible mark on music history. Beyond his celebrated career in music, he has become an influential figure in contemporary art, working across diverse media such as video, sound, sculpture, photography, and digital imagery. His recent publications, including Volume 1 (2018), Our Interference Times: A Visual Record (2019), and Even the Birds Gave Pause (2023), highlight his innovative approach to storytelling and his commitment to exploring the boundaries of visual expression. Born in Decatur, Georgia, Stipe developed an early fascination with art and music, shaped by his Southern upbringing and extensive travels during his time with R.E.M. He studied photography and painting at the University of Georgia, establishing a foundation for his later ventures into the visual arts.
