Venus Optics Unveils Laowa Nanomorph LF 1.5x Anamorphic Lenses
Venus Optics introduced the Nanomorph LF 1.5x Anamorphic Series lenses, which include four professional-grade anamorphic lenses for full-frame and large-format cameras. The new lenses are intended for high-end and high-budget productions, including theatrical releases.
The Nanomorph LF series includes four focal lengths and spans a huge 44.71-millimeter image circle, which is more than enough for full-frame cameras and some larger sensors, such as the Arri Alexa LF. The new series includes 32mm T2.9, 42mm T2.9, 55mm T2.9, and 85mm T2.9 primes, providing versatility for a variety of shooting conditions.
The consistent 1.5x squeeze ratio across the lineup allows filmmakers to produce a 2.66:1 aspect ratio when desqueezed on a 16:9 sensor. According to the firm, the 1.5x squeeze ratio produces a more pronounced cinematic effect than a 1.33x anamorphic lens. A 1.8x or 2x ratio, on the other hand, would have resulted in a significantly larger lens that would have performed less well on a 16:9 sensor.
“The 1.5x squeeze ratio produces distinctive anamorphic qualities. Creating a smooth, authentic waterfall focus roll-off in the background is one of the most sought-after features in the film industry,” Venus Optics adds. “In contrast to other anamorphic lenses on the market, where bokeh can shift from center to edge and sometimes appear distorted, this latest innovation from Laowa ensures greater uniformity across the frame, making it perfect for creating immersive visuals without distractions.”
Although image quality has received a lot of attention, Venus Optics claims it has also worked on keeping its lenses small and light. The manufacturer says that its new Laowa Nanomorph LF lenses are smaller and lighter than comparable lenses. The heaviest lens, the 32mm T2.9, weighs 1,070 grams (2.3 pounds), while the lightest, the 55mm T2.9, is 907 grams (two pounds). The lenses range in size from 113 to 121 millimeters (4.5 to 4.8 inches) and have 0.8M gear gearing, 77mm filter threads, and an 80mm front diameter. Each lens also features 270 degrees of focus throw, 70 degrees of aperture throw, and 13 aperture blades.
Each Nanomorph LF lens is designed to dramatically eliminate focus breathing, resulting in consistent framing throughout focus shifts. Each lens also contains built-in rear focus mechanisms, which eliminate the need for time-consuming shimming.
The signature anamorphic lens flare is available in three coatings: amber, blue, and silver.
Each lens costs $1,499 alone, but all four are available in a bundle for $5,399, saving roughly $600. The lenses come with a PL mount, but it is interchangeable, and additional mounts, such as Canon EF and RF, Sony E, Nikon Z, and L-Mount, are available for $50 apiece.
