Canon Announces the EOS R50 V
The Canon EOS R50 V is purpose-built to provide an entry-level video audience with a very lightweight version of the Canon EOS Cinema experience.
The EOS R50 V has video-friendly features such as false color, Canon C-Log 3, 10-bit YCC 422 video, 4-channel audio, and dedicated headphone, microphone, and remote control connections.
The Canon EOS R50 V is likewise geared toward social media artists, thus it can shoot vertically as well as horizontally. The camera’s control layout is optimized for both orientations, with a front recording button and a dedicated live stream button, orientation-sensitive menus, and a 1/4-20 slot on the side of the grip (there is also one on the bottom).
Canon describes the EOS R50 V as having the legacy of Cinema EOS technologies splashed throughout.
The EOS R50 V boasts Canon’s tried-and-true 24-megapixel APS-C CMOS picture sensor with Dual Pixel CMOS AF, as well as the DIGIC X image engine. While the camera’s electronic shutter allows it to shoot full-resolution RAW and JPEG photographs at a reasonable rate of 15 frames per second, it is clearly intended at video users.
The Canon R50 V captures 4K video at frame rates of up to 60p, although with a 1.4x reduction. For customers who require the whole breadth of the sensor, maybe to take advantage of the new RF-S 14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM PZ lens’s wide-angle focal length, 4K recording is limited to 30p. It’s worth mentioning that, in addition to the false color display, the R50 V has audio level indicators during recording, and users can easily modify the white balance using Kelvin values via the camera’s fast menu.
Canon has also placed a strong emphasis on live streaming. The EOS R50 V enables UVC/UAV 4Kp60 streaming, but the normal R50 can only handle 1080p60. The new R50 V also enables wireless streaming via Camera Connect and Live Switcher Mobile.
The Canon EOS R50 V includes Canon’s most recent autofocus modes, several of which are carried over from the Canon EOS R6 Mark II full-frame camera. The R50 V’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology covers nearly all of the APS-C picture area, provides AI-powered subject detection and tracking (humans, animals, and vehicles), and has eye-detect AF for people and animals.
The camera features a three-inch back monitor with 1.04 million dots that folds outward for vertical and self-facing video.
The EOS R50 V measures roughly 119.3 by 73.7 by 45.2 millimeters and weighs 370 grams with the battery and an SD card installed. The camera features one UHS-II SD card slot.
The Canon EOS R50 V will be released in April as a body-only ($649.99) and kit with the new RF-S 14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM PZ lens ($849.99).
