Fujifilm’s New Updates On Upcoming Medium-Format Cinema Camera GFX Eterna

Fujifilm has provided a series of updates regarding its upcoming medium-format cinema camera, the GFX Eterna, which is currently under development. Designed to meet the growing demand for large-format video capture, the GFX Eterna incorporates a 44 x 33mm CMOS II HS sensor with a resolution of 102 megapixels, the same sensor used in the GFX100 II. This large sensor is approximately 1.7 times bigger than traditional full-frame sensors and supports 4K open gate recording using the full 4:3 sensor area, offering high-resolution output for cinematic productions.

The camera features dual native ISO settings at 800 and 3200, optimized for Fujifilm’s F-Log 2 and F-Log 2C gamma curves, which are designed for extended dynamic range and colour grading flexibility in post-production. The sensor readout speed in 4K 16:9 mode is expected to be around 15ms, matching the performance of the GFX100 II.

A notable inclusion is the variable electronic neutral density (ND) filter system, ranging from ND0.6 to ND2.1, equivalent to 2 to 7 stops of light reduction. This system is adjustable in 0.1 stop increments and combines mechanical insertion of the filter with electronic control of its intensity.

For power, the GFX Eterna is compatible with internal NP-W235 batteries—the same 2,200 mAh battery used across several GFX and X Series cameras. The camera also supports external power sources via DC input, allowing for hot-swapping of external batteries. The internal battery can be automatically charged through the external power source, ensuring continuous operation during battery transitions.

The camera offers dual internal media slots, supporting both CFexpress Type B and SD cards (likely UHS-II). While exact limitations on recording modes per media type have not yet been disclosed, based on similar models like the GFX100 II, it is expected that higher bitrate formats may require CFexpress Type B or V90 SD cards.

Audio capabilities include an internal microphone for scratch audio, a 3.5mm input jack, and compatibility with the TASCAM XLR Microphone Adapter Handle Accessory, which provides two professional XLR audio inputs. This allows integration with industry-standard microphones and professional audio gear.

The GFX Eterna also integrates Frame.io Camera to Cloud functionality. This enables the camera to connect via Wi-Fi or Ethernet to a Frame.io project and automatically upload proxy video files during recording, making it valuable for real-time collaboration in a team.

In terms of physical design, early renders show that the camera body includes a variety of professional connectors, including Genlock, USB-C, Ethernet, and audio/video outputs. It will also feature a locking lens mount, for stability and support. An optional adapter for PL-mount lenses is also being developed, though users will need to ensure lens coverage is sufficient for the large GFX sensor format.

A 5-inch touchscreen monitor will be included with the camera. Autofocus performance is expected to be consistent with current GFX models, offering reliable operation for controlled shooting environments.

The official release date and pricing details for the GFX Eterna have not yet been disclosed, but Fujifilm has confirmed the camera is scheduled for release in 2025.
