KIPON Introduces CINESPEED65 Medium Format Cinema Lens

Chinese company KIPON has introduced the CINESPEED65 68mm T1.4, the company’s first lens specifically developed to cover medium and large-format image sensors.

In full-frame equivalent terms, the CINESPEED65 68mm T1.4 lens corresponds approximately to a 50mm f/1.1, placing it within the standard focal length range often used in filmmaking.

Although KIPON has not yet disclosed full technical specifications, initial information suggests the lens will be compatible with cinema cameras using PL mounts and can also be adapted for hybrid medium-format systems such as the anticipated Fujifilm GFX Eterna. If the CINESPEED65 fully covers the GFX sensor—along with potential allowances for in-body image stabilization—it may offer a viable native solution for filmmakers working in this format.

Mechanically, the lens appears to feature traditional cinema-style dual-ring manual controls: a large, geared focus ring positioned at the front and a separate aperture ring near the rear. The iris control may follow a non-linear pattern, with a longer rotation angle at wider apertures. A tripod support foot is integrated near the front section of the lens housing, a common feature for cine lenses of this size and weight.

To develop the CINESPEED65, KIPON collaborated with renowned optical designer Iain Neil, a multiple Academy Award winner known for his work with brands such as Cooke, Panavision, and Leica. The company also announced on Instagram their partnership with Sinemaskope Films for use of the lens in the upcoming feature film The Remains, where it will be deployed to capture imagery approximating the 6×7 film format using digital sensors—a level of image area coverage typically reserved for IMAX 65mm film.

KIPON has stated that the CINESPEED65 is the first lens in what will become an expanding lineup aimed at medium and large-format cinema applications. No image samples, pricing, or availability dates have been released yet, and performance characteristics such as image circle coverage or optical resolution remain unconfirmed at this stage.
