Viltrox Introduces AF 35mm f/1.2 LAB Lens
Chinese company Viltrox has officially released the AF 35mm f/1.2 LAB lens for Sony E-mount, expanding its LAB series with a full-frame, wide-angle prime lens. Designed with an ultra-large aperture of f/1.2, the lens suites both photography and video applications.
The AF f/1.2 consists of 15 elements in 10 groups, including five extra-low dispersion (ED) lenses, three high-refractive index elements, and two aspherical (UA) elements. As the company claims, such optical configuration is designed to minimize chromatic aberrations, reduce distortion, and enhance contrast and clarity, even when shooting wide open. A multilayer nano-coating has been applied to suppress flare and ghosting, while the front element features a moisture-resistant coating to protect against environmental elements.
Constructed with a full-metal body, the lens weighs approximately 920 grams and measures about 122mm in length, with a front filter thread of 77mm.
The lens barrel incorporates a range of user-focused features, including a multi-function control ring that can be used to adjust either aperture or focus, an AF/MF switch, and two customizable function buttons. An additional clicked/de-clicked aperture control is available, optimized for hybrid shooting environments. Furthermore, a small LCD display is integrated into the lens body, providing real-time information such as aperture value and focusing distance. This display, along with other settings, can be configured via the Viltrox Lens App. The lens also includes a USB-C port for firmware updates.
Autofocus is driven by Viltrox’s Quad HyperVCM linear motors. According to the manufacturer, the autofocus system offers a significant speed improvement over conventional STM motors and maintains micron-level positioning accuracy.
The minimum focusing distance is 0.34 meters, enabling a maximum magnification of 0.17x, which makes it suitable for capturing detailed close-ups. The lens also supports in-camera face and eye detection.
