About me

Giedo van der Zwan (1967), born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Since the age of 11 Giedo has been active in photography and he has experimented with many different genres such as wildlife-, macro- and travel photography. Early 2017, Giedo discovered the joy of street photography. And while his day job is being a self-employed writer and publisher, he is spending an increasing amount of time shooting the streets of his hometown and also cities around the world. In the same year, Giedo started a long-term project ‘Pier to Pier’ which is about the local beach culture of Scheveningen, which is where he lives. In June 2018 he published a book and started his solo exhibition on the Pier of Scheveningen under the same title. His work has been published in many national and international dailies and photo magazines. He has been a finalist and won several photography prizes at national and international festivals and received international recognition for his body of work. About his work In his book Giedo’s photography is described as follows: “With his sharp eye, vision, good choice of subjects, clever positioning, perfect composition, beautiful use of colour and flash and a sense of ‘drama with a wink’, Giedo epitomizes a very versatile and modern photographer….” Giedo is inspired by photographers like Alex Webb, Martin Parr and Dutch Ed van der Elsken. He likes the clever layered compositions and beautiful use of colour from Webb, the confronting and humorous approach from Parr and the positive approach from Van der Elsken. Giedo shoots candid but is not invisible on the street. As he often uses flash and works close-up to people with a wide angle lens, he often is in contact with people explaining what his work is about. Giedo: “I like to make connections: little scenes connected in my viewfinder which together create a new meaning and make for narratives that can be funny, weird, scary or evoke another emotion.”
