About me
For over forty years my photographic practice has developed using street photography, ethno-photography and cultural photography in both methodology and intent. While my initial background in Economics and Industrial Relations affected the way I look at the world and people within different societies, I have been able to develop a style which actively involves people and their environment. This style was first formed in the UK and grew during my travels through Egypt and Sudan in the 1980’s. Working as Antique Map dealer has enabled me for the last fifteen years to visit places like the Amazon, China, the Andes, the Himalayas and the Sahara coupled with the streets of Delhi, Beijing and Naples
While living in different counties I have learnt about respect for all societies, developing a rapport with individuals and groups when taking portraits and where possible giving the subject freedom to decide how much of themselves they want to be seen. I believe that photographs should be fun for people both in front and behind the lens.
My work also includes candid photographic shots, and over the years have discovered and developed an eye for the ’moment’. I am a believer that these photographs can tell stories and while not every photo has to be an award winner they must be part of the story. I try to take photographs that are part of a narrative that adds something to one’s perceptions of a people and culture. The photographs can be as simple as a portrait, a common street scene or capturing a moment that illustrates social relationships.
As a ‘street’ photographer I attempt to capture the vitality and joyfulness of a place. I interact well with people and try to show the humanity and the humour of the many cultures that I have visited and revisited.
My project for the last 15 years has been to capture the similarities shared by humanity from across the world, from the Near and Far East, Europe, and Latin America. I will continue to add more photo stories of a changing world for as long as I am able.
A friend and photographer for AP said of my latest project
“You’ve captured the pride and vibrancy that is very much present in Cuba, despite the hell it has become. So much humanity, so many great moments… so many beautiful faces and expressions. It’s a really lovely collection.”
