American Street Photography, 1950s – 1970s
La Galerie Rouge is pleased to announce “American Street Photography,” a group exhibition showcasing the work of six iconic figures in American street photography: Louis Faurer, Jill Freedman, Dave Heath, Danny Lyon, Joseph Sterling, and Garry Winogrand.
This carefully curated exhibition explores the rich and diverse approaches of these photographers, who sought to capture the essence of American society during a period of profound transformation. Through their lenses, the street becomes both a stage and a canvas, reflecting the triumphs, struggles, and contradictions of post-war America—from the optimism of the 1950s to the activism of the 1960s and the disillusionment of the 1970s.
The exhibition highlights a range of photographic styles, from the quiet, observational works of Louis Faurer and Dave Heath to the raw, spontaneous energy of Garry Winogrand and Jill Freedman, and the socially engaged narratives of Danny Lyon and Joseph Sterling. While each artist followed a unique path, all rejected the notion of objective photography, opting instead for a deeply personal and candid approach that reveals the complexities of the human condition.
Featured Photographers:
● Louis Faurer (1916–2001): Known for his poignant portrayals of individuals in the bustling streets of Times Square, focusing on their vulnerabilities rather than the sensationalism of urban life.
● Dave Heath (1931–2016): His seminal work, Dialogue with a Solitude (1965), captures the solitude and fractures of post-war America, using the modern city as a metaphorical stage.
● Joseph Sterling (1936–2010): Creator of The Age of Adolescence (1959–1964), a series documenting the cultural revolution of American youth, from tattoo parlors to high school dances.
● Garry Winogrand (1928–1984): A pioneer of spontaneous, off-center street photography that freezes candid moments filled with irony, tenderness, and melancholy.
● Jill Freedman (1939–2019): A photographer deeply immersed in her subjects’ lives, capturing New York City’s vibrant characters, relationships, and street theater over three decades.
● Danny Lyon (1942–): A socially committed photographer, known for embedding himself in marginalized communities, with works such as The Bikeriders (1968) and Conversations with the Dead (1971).
“American Street Photography” invites viewers to rediscover a pivotal era in American history through the eyes of these exceptional artists, whose work remains as relevant today as ever.
