Canon Announces the RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM Lens

Canon’s new RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM lens for full-frame Canon EOS R mirrorless cameras adds to the company’s compact and cheap f/2.8 zoom lineup. The ultra-wide RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM, which joins the lightweight RF 28-70mm f/2.8 IS STM launched in September, provides photographers and hybrid producers with a quick constant f/2.8 aperture and wide-angle field of view in a small and portable package.

Canon claims that the RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM is ideal for those seeking superb bokeh, portability, and a low price.

The RF 16-28mm f/2.8 weighs 445 grams and is only 91 millimeters long when retracted.

The RF 16-28mm f/2.8 features 16 elements in 13 groups, including two aspherical lenses and four UD lenses.

In terms of autofocus, the lens incorporates Canon’s stepper motor technology, which claims to focus quite quickly and quietly. With a 28mm focal length, the lens can focus as near as 0.2 meters, providing a maximum magnification of 0.26x.

The RF 16-28mm f/2.8 lens allows in-camera focus breathing correction, which, based on sample footage, might be advisable to enable. Speaking about optical corrections, the lens should be used in conjunction with Canon’s digital lens corrections. Without these, the lens will have a strong vignette, particularly at 16mm.

Optical picture stabilization corrects vibration by up to 5.5 stops in the middle of the frame. However, the lens also supports coordinate I.S. with compatible IBIS-equipped cameras, which can increase stabilization by up to eight stops.

The Canon RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM has a suggested retail price of $1,149 and will ship on February 11.
