Canon Introduces the RF-Mount Cinema Prime Lenses

Canon has announced the release of its first RF-Mount cinema prime lenses. The CN-R 14mm T3.1 L F, CN-R 20mm T1.5 L F, CN-R 24mm T1.5 L F, CN-R 35mm T1.5 L F, CN-R 50mm T1.3 L F, CN-R 85mm T1.3 L F, and CN-R 135mm T2.2 L F are among the seven Canon CN-R lenses.

Canon has begun the daunting process of creating native RF-mount versions of their cinema lenses in addition to the existing EF and PL mount alternatives. The initial batch of RF lenses includes seven cinema primes ranging in focal length from 14mm to 135mm, costing roughly $4,000.

“The new lenses combine high optical performance for 4K and 8K shooting, cinema-style operability, and RF mount communications. The first set of seven RF-Mount Cinema Prime Lenses is only the beginning. Canon plans to swiftly expand the lineup of RF-mount-compatible video production equipment to meet the needs of professional video production of such content as movies, TV, and commercials,” says Canon.

Canon’s CN-R lenses are intended for usage with 4K and 8K movie cameras. Canon claims the lenses have large-diameter aspherical lens elements and anomalous dispersion glass, which assures optimal image quality.

All of the lenses are full-frame compatible and have 11-bladed aperture diaphragms. Canon says its CN-R lenses have a narrow depth of field, natural circular blurring, and soft image expression. Furthermore, the lenses in Canon’s Cinema EOS series offer unified color balancing, ensuring consistent color regardless of the lens used.

The lenses also boast an ideal level of ring torque and a consistent gear location and diameter. This allows the lenses to be easily swapped in and out without altering matte boxes or other focus equipment. Canon has added a new coarse surface near the mount for a more comfortable and ergonomic fit in the user’s hand. The new CN-R lenses, which use RF-Mount communication, work with several features on Canon EOS R series cameras, including focus magnification, chromatic aberration correction, peripheral light correction, dual-pixel autofocus, and lens distortion corrections.

The CN-R 14mm, 20mm, and 24mm primes cost $4,220 apiece, while the following four lenses cost $3,950 each: 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 135mm.

The 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm CN-R lenses will be available in late January 2024. The CN-R 14mm will be available in late February, the CN-R 20mm in late March, and the CN-R 135mm around the end of April.
