Christopher Robin Duncan: Poems

Widely recognized for his work in textiles and sound, Christopher Robin Duncan has recently embraced photography once more, discovering an unadorned and genuine joy in this medium that he had set aside for some time. Duncan’s artistic journey now engages with photography in ways shaped by a strong connection to time and an instinctive rapport with the natural world. Using a half-frame camera, which splits the film and effectively doubles time and space, he crafts fleeting, suspended moments—intervals as brief as a heartbeat, a split second—where he moves almost imperceptibly, creating pauses infused with stillness. In Poems, Duncan reveals a sensitive approach to time, immersing us in the rhythms of seasons and natural cycles. We feel the presence of air, water, and wind within the work. Much like a poetry collection where verses reflect and respond to one another, Duncan’s lo-fi yet captivating images in Poems merge into a unified whole, forming a full circle around a central, sun-like energy. The views echo softly across the distance, resonating like stanzas in a continuous, harmonious cycle. As with the wind that sweeps through the scenes he captures, we too can interact with these unbound pages, reimagining and rearranging their “rhymes” into visual compositions that vary with each viewing.

Beyond his studio work, he co-runs LAND AND SEA, a small press and record label, with his partner Maria Otero. Duncan’s work is included in the collections of The Berkeley Art Museum, MoMA, Kemper Art Museum, SF MoMA, the de Young Museum, and several other esteemed institutions.
