Eric Meola Bending Light. The Moods of Color

Bending Light: The Moods of Color delves into photographer Eric Meola’s mastery of light and color, showcasing his evolution over decades of editorial, commercial, and personal photography. With one hundred striking images, including recent forays into abstract color studies, and a rich collection of stories and reflections, Meola invites readers to explore the symbolic and emotional dimensions of color in photography. Drawing inspiration from literature, art, music, and the quest for visual metaphor, Meola’s work spans intimate portraits, vivid landscapes, and color-drenched abstractions. His precise use of geometry within each frame creates an unmistakable tension, making his style instantly identifiable. In 2023, the Professional Photographers of America honored Meola with its Lifetime Achievement Award, describing him as a photographer who “champions the emotional potential of photography as a visual language. His passion for color, light, and creative freedom is unparalleled.”

As Meola reflects:
“Light and color are as much my subjects as the scenes I photograph. The interplay of color and light—their movement and synergy—holds profound meaning for me. Though a photograph freezes a moment, the process of its creation carries its own story. By sharing these narratives, I revisit the creative journey, engaging in introspection while expressing my artistic vision. For me, photography has always been about translating emotion into imagery and feeling through creation.”

Bending Light: The Moods of Color takes readers on a global voyage, with Meola recounting the origins of each photograph and providing insight into his creative process. A Rangefinder magazine photographer once called him “one of the few true innovators in color photography.”
