H&Y Announces Revoring Black Mist Filter for Vintage Look
Hong Kong-based H&Y, known for the first-ever variable step filter adapter launched last year, has announced a new series of Black Mist Filters. Designed to work with the REVORING variable adapter design, the new filter, and magnetic clip-on attachments, join a long lineup of high-quality lens accessories. Aiming to replace step-up rings, H&Y products are a great fit for photographers and cinematographers alike.
What separates H&Y’s filters from traditional filters is that the Revoring offers a variable diameter with self-retracting blades, allowing you to use it on lenses with different filter sizes without needing to use step-up rings.
The company says “Cinematographers strives to create a film-like ambiance while high-quality modern camera offer too much sharpness. H&Y Black Mist filter is designed to give a dreamy hint to pictures and especially video by creating a pastel effect to the whole picture. The contrast of the dark parts is mostly retained. Hard edges of the picture will be softened, especially around the light sources. A subtle glow will be added around the light spots.”
All REVORING products are made using Architectural grade Aluminium, keeping it lightweight and tough. The anodized finish also protects the ring from corrosion when shooting outside in unpredicted elements. The threaded ends are designed to overlap, preventing light leaks when using the Revoring VND + CPL or new Black Mist filters. Magnetic aluminum caps are also available for the filters. The REVORING Black Mist Filter comes in two size ranges. The smaller model fits lenses with a 46mm to 62mm thread size and the larger for lenses with a 67mm to 82mm thread size. The built-in and non-detachable Black Mist filter come in at 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 strength.
Like other Black Mist filters, this one suppresses highlights, smooths skin blemishes, and provides a more vintage cinematic look for still photography and video applications.
The REVORING adapters, as well as its VND/CPL and Black Mist cousins, fill a unique niche in the lens market. Vintage lenses of all shapes and sizes are returning from the dead and ever-evolving camera technologies are utilizing different thread sizes as lenses grow in complexity and reduce in size.
Because of the softening effect, the company also claims that any people in the shots will also have their skin softened effectively smoothing out blemishes and wrinkles, arguing that this makes the filters suitable for beauty and fashion projects by helping reduce time spent having to retouch the subject’s skin.
The H&Y REVORING Black Mist Filter is a combination of REVORING Variable Step Adapter and black mist filters available for $109 to $119, and the Black Mist Magnetic Clip-on filter is a new add-on magnetic circular black mist filter that can be added to the existing REVORING Variable Neutral Density (VND) and Circular Polarizer (CPL) systems available for $119 to $289. These new filter systems will start shipping between August and September in two sizes, (46-62mm and 67-82mm) and three grades (0.125, 0.25, and 0.5).
