IRIX Unveils the Matte Box IQ
IRIX has just released the Matte Box IQ, a new lightweight and compact matte box. It is designed to work with the company’s magnetic filter technology and natively suits lenses with a front diameter of 95mm. It may be converted to 52-86mm front diameter lenses.
The new Matte Box IQ is designed for filmmakers and video creators who want to achieve the finest possible results in their photos, according to Irix. It will allow filmmakers to maintain ideal contrast in shots by reducing undesired reflections and lens flares. According to the company, it will be most beneficial in difficult lighting situations or in rooms with high light intensity, but it is described as a crucial tool for filmmakers who want to create video that looks like it came from a high-end production.
The IRIX Matte Box IQ is a 195g lightweight matte box constructed of ABS plastic and carbon fiber. The attachment has a matte black finish to reduce undesired reflections and a top carbon fiber French flag to assist eliminate flares. It’s also relatively small and portable (187x142x55mm), making it a good choice for gimbal use.
The biggest selling point of this product is that it works with the company’s magnetic filter system, which is called MMS (Magnetic Mount System). This filter mount option is not new, as it was built in front of IRIX cinema lenses. The mount, however, has since been relocated from the lens to the matte box, allowing many users to profit from the MMS system. Unfortunately, the matte box does not accommodate 4×5.65” industry-standard filters.
Currently, the Magnetic Mount System filters include a VND (2-5 stops), a UV, a CPL, and a full set of NDs (ND4, ND8, ND16, ND32, ND64). They are magnetically attached to the front of the matte box (or IRIX lens) and stackable. The matte box features a clamp-on style and is designed to work with lenses that have a front diameter of 95mm. Optional adapter rings are available for lenses with front diameters ranging from 52mm to 86mm. Finally, the business claims that when used with 15mm lenses installed on full-frame cameras, the Matte Box IQ will not generate any vignette.
The new IRIX Matte Box IQ is now available for $80, while additional adapter rings can be purchased separately for $13.45 each.
