Jean-Pierre Laffont: New York Noir
The Leica Gallery Los Angeles is showcasing *New York Noir*, a collection by Jean-Pierre Laffont.
When he first arrived in New York City in 1964 as a young Frenchman, the city was chaotic, dirty, loud, and dangerous, yet it also had an irresistible allure. *New York Noir*, inspired by 1940s Film Noir, captures this duality—filled with tension and energy, both raw and timeless, much like his experience of the city.
He remembers how New York could feel both overwhelming and exhilarating, and how he was drawn to its vibrant contradictions. Each day brought new emotions, alternating between love and frustration. Through his photography, he aimed to immortalize the city’s intense spirit, embracing both its chaos and the inspiration it sparked.
New York fulfilled many of his dreams, and he hopes his photographs reflect a city he viewed with both criticism and deep affection, one for which he remains profoundly grateful.”
