Joel Meyerowitz: Leica Hall of Fame 2016

From 25 January to 2 April 2022, Leica Galerie Milan hosts an exhibition dedicated to Joel Meyerowitz, great master of contemporary photography, one of the greatest protagonists of street photography, among the first to make color an essential element of his artistic language in the sixties and seventies of the last century, awarded with the 2016 Leica Hall of Fame, a recognition that celebrates authors who have contributed to the evolution of photographic language and who have given prestige to the Leica brand.

The exhibition, curated by Karin Rehn Kaufmann, art director Leica Galleries International, presents fifty photographs capable of retracing the most decisive periods of his career, taken in different countries and in many cities.
From the images captured in the streets of New York, the perfect environment to observe the events of the various humanity that populate the big city, to those collected during a one-year journey through Europe between 1966 and 1967. From those taken in Paris, among which stands out the one that portrays the scene of the man who faints in the almost total indifference of the people around him, to the Spanish landscapes captured through the glass filter of the speeding car; from Naples to Malaga, from Ireland to Bulgaria, to Germany, up to the series in London and the United Kingdom.

The path also continues with the photographs, again captured in the United States, in which color became an even more important element for him.
A prominent figure in so-called street photography, Meyerowitz has inspired generations of contemporary artists. Decisive, for his entry into the world of photography, was the meeting with Robert Frank in the early sixties, whom he met during his work as art director for an advertising agency.

Starting in 1962, Meyerowitz understood the revolutionary significance that color, at that time considered a superficial element and a tool in the hands of amateurs, introduced into photography to document particularly important facts of society, such as political events, sporting events, but also moments. of contradiction, as well as of joy and enthusiasm for life.

Thanks to his intuition, even the printed word, which until then used to use black and white images to illustrate the published articles, converts to color recognizing a strong ability to capture the moments of everyday life that took place in the streets of the metropolis, of major issues such as loneliness, incommunicability, clashes, and social protests.

A portrait of Joel Meyerowitz

Meyerowitz escapes any historical collocation. The progenitor of the most modern street photography, he rewrites its linguistic codes which, within an apparent disorder, harmoniously describe life and everyday life and above all the contradictions and fears but also the joy of living.
