Laowa Unveils a New Pancake 15mm f/5 Full-Frame Lens
Laowa’s new 15mm f/5 pancake lens for full-frame cameras is incredibly small and compact. Laowa is promoting its latest lens, which weighs only 158 grams and has a 110-degree field of view, as a “always with you” lens for unusual close-ups, interesting angles, and realistic point-of-view images.
The 15mm f/5, like Laowa’s previous “cookie,” the 10mm f/4 for APS-C sensors, is small and compact, with uneven surfaces projecting from a much broader base surrounding the lens mount. Laowa’s new 15mm lens is available for a variety of camera manufacturers, including Sony E and Nikon Z with auto-aperture settings, as well as manual-only versions for Canon RF, L Mount, and Leica M.
It has a small 12-centimeter minimum focusing distance. There is a 39mm filter thread. The tiny 10-blade aperture they squeezed in there should result in some clear and distinct sunstars. An f/5 lens this wide will thrive in stopped-down, high ISO conditions while shooting stills. In video, however, Laowa emphasizes the lens’s utility as a point of view angle for content makers. On full-frame cameras, 15mm duplicates a person’s point of view comfortably without adding distortion from a wider angle lens.
The Laowa 15mm f/5 Cookie FF is now available for $400 in silver and black for all lens mounts. It is currently available for purchase on Venus Optics’ website.
