Leica Introduces the Vario-Elmarit-SL 70-200mm f/2.8 ASPH Lens

Leica has launched the Vario-Elmarit-SL 70-200mm f/2.8 ASPH, the third and final f/2.8 professional zoom for the full-frame SL-System.

The new 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, which joins the Leica Super-Vario-Elmarit-SL 14-24mm f/2.8 ASPH and Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-70mm f/2.8 ASPH, significantly expands the focal length coverage of Leica’s SL-System lens lineup. Furthermore, Leica Camera AG unveiled the Extender L 2.0x teleconverter, which boosts the versatility of its SL lenses and converts the new 70-200mm lens into a 140-400mm f/5.6 zoom.

According to Leica, the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is perfect for portraiture, events, sports, and nature photography. The lens promises exceptional performance in both still and video applications.

The lens contains 20 elements divided into 15 groups, including three aspherical elements. It has an internal focusing construction, which means that modifying the focal length or focus distance has no effect on its physical length. Leica also guarantees razor-sharp photos from corner to corner at all focal lengths.

The Vario-Elmarit-SL 70-200mm zoom weights 1,540 grams without the lens hood and measures roughly 205 millimeters in length. The lens is dust and splash-resistant, with Hydrophobe Aqua-Dura coating on exposed parts.

The new Leica 70-200mm f/2.8 lens along with the teleconverter are now available globally. Leica lenses cost $3,295. The Leica Extender L 2.0x is likewise relatively pricey, at $995.
