Leitz Launches the Cine Lenses Compare Tool

Leitz recently tested its lenses and uploaded the Cine Lens Test Tool to its website. Cinematographers and filmmakers can now compare footage shot during the tests with up to four Leitz lenses at once.

Leitz, founded in 2007, is a sister company to Leica that produces quality cine lenses for film and television. They stock eight distinct brands of prime and zoom cine lenses, including the LEITZ PRIME, LEITZ ZOOM, HUGO, and others.

The company evaluated seven different sets of Leitz lenses on a Sony VENICE. Jay Holden directed it, and Kaity Williams handled the cinematography. The lens sets evaluated are LEITZ PRIME, LEITZ ZOOM, ELSIE, HUGO, SUMMICRON-C, SUMMILUX-C, and THALIA.

Leitz divides their lenses into three different families:

  • Performance: The main design parameters are edge-to-edge consistency and quality.
  • Character: Professional lenses designed for cinema but with some extra personality.
  • Legacy: Lenses that use Leica photography optics in cine-style housings.

The Cine Lens Test Tool on their website allows you to choose the lens (such as the LEITZ PRIME), focal length, and T-stop. The accompanying footage is available for viewing and analysis. Clicking the + icon allows you to add and compare up to four lenses. It’s a good place to start to see what the final footage will look like with a particular lens.
