Leofoto Announces the Spider Tripod
The Spider, a fairly unique tabletop-sized tripod from Leofoto, is about to be released. When collapsed, it resembles most tiny tripods in appearance, but when in “spider mode,” its three multi-jointed legs enable it to adapt to various settings.
The company touts a brand-new design with a folding mechanism to conceal the lower leg parts. But when used, the small tabletop tripod can hook or hold onto objects to provide a secure shooting platform where one might not have otherwise been.
The design comes in two sizes: the MT-04, which has three total leg sections and a minimum deployed height of 40mm, and the MT-03, which is smaller and has a minimum height of 35mm with only two leg segments. The MT-03 is 170mm long when folded, but the MT-04 is 145mm long. The MT-03 is 186mm tall when fully deployed, while the MT-04 is 290mm.
The tripod head platform may be locked in three different inclined positions: 35 degrees (tall), 55 degrees (mid-height), and 85 degrees (nearly flat to the ground). The top component of the tripod’s three legs attaches to this platform.
Leofoto seems to suggest that the tripod can function somewhat similarly to a Gorillapod, but its legs are more rigid and are, therefore, simpler to fully straighten. Additionally, the company has provided a row of 1/4-inch (on the MT-03) or 3/8-inch (on the MT-04) connections on the top two segments of each leg, allowing photographers or filmmakers to quickly install accessories to the Spider, such as lights or monitors.
The larger MT-04 type can handle up to five kilograms, whilst the smaller MT-03 model can only support a maximum load of three kilograms.
Leofoto’s website does not disclose pricing or availability for the Spider tripod, but Asobinet reports it will be available beginning July 31. Retail prices for the MT-04 with and without an included head are 19,800 yen (about $142) and 35,640 yen (roughly $255), respectively.
