Lexar Unveils SL600 Portable SSD
Lexar’s new SL600 portable SSD has speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s and is available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. Lexar markets the drive to photographers, videographers, and content makers, highlighting its mobility, design, performance, and ruggedness. The drive has USB Type-C and Type-A cables and is shock and vibration-resistant. The SL600 has a carabiner loop at one end, allowing users to conveniently attach it to their backpack.
“We understand that many creative professionals need solutions that expedite their workflows and make their jobs easier. The Lexar Professional SL600 Portable SSD does just that by offering blazing fast read and write speeds that allow creatives to spend more time focusing on their craft rather than waiting for files to transfer,” says Joey Lopez, Lexar’s Director of Marketing.
The Lexar SL600 offers USB 3.2 gen 2×2 capability with read and write rates of up to 2,000 MB/s. While the footnotes on Lexar’s product page state that real performance may vary, as is always the case with storage devices, the company does not provide specifications for minimum read/write speeds.
To get rates near 2,000 MB/s, users need a computer or host device certified to support the 20 Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 standard. If a device lacks USB 3.2 Gen 2×2, it will experience a 50% reduction in speed. This is especially crucial for Mac users, as Apple devices, even those with Thunderbolt and USB 4 capability, do not include USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 technology. The SL600 measures 112.6 x 59 x 10.6 millimeters and weighs 64 grams.
The SL600 uses USB power, just like every other practical portable SSD.
The Lexar SL600 comes in three different capacities. The 1TB and 2TB variants are already available at stores for $90 and $140, respectively, despite their quoted costs of $130 and $175. The 4TB version is not yet available, but Lexar says it will be ready next quarter, presumably sometime this spring.
