LG Unveils the UltraFine 6K Display with Thunderbolt 5 at CES

LG unveiled a new Ultrafine 6K monitor at CES 2025. The 32-inch display is the first of its kind to enable Thunderbolt 5, which Apple debuted late last year alongside the release of new Mac mini and MacBook Pro models powered by M4 Pro CPUs.

The LG Ultrafine 6K will be a direct competitor to Apple's Pro Display XDR

The LG UltraFine 6K monitor (model 32U990A) has a Nano IPS Black screen with a wide color range covering 99.5% of Adobe RGB and 98% of DCI-P3. LG hasn’t divulged the precise resolution, but a reasonable comparison is Apple’s Pro Display XDR, which boasts a 32-inch Retina 6K display with over 6016 x 3384 pixels and a pixel density of 218 pixels per inch.

It’s also unclear whether this is a 60Hz or 120Hz monitor. Thunderbolt 5 supports 80Gb/s of bidirectional bandwidth and 120Gb/s in one direction with Bandwidth Boost enabled, while DisplayPort 2.1 allows for three 4K monitors at 144Hz or two 8K displays at 60Hz. In other words, a 6K resolution display running at 120Hz should be technically conceivable over TB5, but LG has yet to confirm whether or not this model supports it.

The XDR-esque appearance is likely the most visible departure from previous UltraFine displays. The monitor has a height-adjustable stand akin to Apple’s Studio Display, and the bezel-less screen offers a dramatic contrast to the original LG UltraFine 5K display.

The pricing, which LG has not disclosed, will determine whether this is a direct competition to Apple’s XDR Display. However, the adoption of an IPS Black screen may make it less expensive. For comparison, Dell’s UltraSharp 32-inch 6K monitor, which also features an IPS Black panel, starts at $2,479.99, while Apple’s Pro Display XDR starts at $4,999. LG has not yet announced a release date for their new monitor, but we’ll keep you updated as soon as we have more information.
