Michael Stipe: Even the Birds Gave Pause

Artist and former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe presents his first exhibition with the gallery, Even the Birds Gave Pause, a multifaceted exploration of portraiture and creative expression. Drawing from his latest book of the same name, published by Damiani, the exhibition expands on its foundation with a rich array of artworks that reflect the breadth of Stipe’s artistic practice. The exhibition features a range of mediums, including candid and conceptual photographs of family and friends, an installation of delicately folded rice paper portraits, vibrant painted bronze fox sculptures, and book-art portraits honoring his muses. At its core, Stipe’s work reveals a profound sensitivity to the vulnerability of his subjects, expressed through a variety of approaches—whether classical or experimental. Known globally as the lead singer of R.E.M., Stipe has transitioned seamlessly into the visual arts, showcasing his talent for observation and storytelling through imagery. His work has evolved to embrace a deeply personal and intuitive form of artistic expression, reflecting his view of the world and the connections within it. This exhibition provides a window into his creative process, offering audiences a chance to experience the striking interplay of intimacy, texture, and form that defines his art.
Even the Birds Gave Pause is an invitation to step into Stipe’s world—a space where portraiture becomes a bridge between reality and emotion, capturing not just moments but the fragile beauty of human existence.
