Moment Introduces the Smartphone SuperCage
Moment introduced the SuperCage, an all-in-one smartphone camera cage. It has a power-delivery-capable USB-C hub, a microphone jack, a headphone connector, an SD card reader, ports, and the flexibility to add to the cage to make iPhone filming feel more like shooting with a real camera.
Moment developed it to keep the smartphone in the center of the ovular gate and provides a USB-C connection via a high-transfer ribbon cable that allows for both power and data transfer. The dedicated PD100W connector, which delivers 100W of pass-through power, may charge a phone and power accessories. The cage does not include a battery, so an external power source is required.
Moment included a UHS-II SD card reader, which, while helpful, will not give adequate speed to capture ProRes Logs on iPhone 15 or 16 series phones. To fulfill the iPhone’s requirement for external recording when shooting high frame rate ProRes Log, an SSD can be attached via the USB-C 3.2 connector, which enables 10 Gb/s transfer speeds. Moment also has an HDMI 2.0 full-size port for external video monitoring, a 3.5mm input and output for microphones and headphones, and additional USB-C 3.2 ports for powering auxiliary equipment such as lights or microphones.
The entire cage employs an open rail system, with NATO compatibility on the sides and top and Arca connectivity on the base.
The cage comes in two versions: the SuperCage and the BaseCage. The SuperCage is a complete solution with an extensible power-integrated USB-C hub and open NATO rails. The BaseCage is a simple, lightweight cage without integrated power and connections.
The Moment SuperCage and BaseCage are debuting on Kickstarter at a reduction from their eventual retail costs of $199 and $129. Moment plans to ship units to funders by December 2024.
