Nikon Introduces the Z5 II Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera
Nikon has introduced the Z5 II, a full-frame mirrorless camera that brings significant upgrades over its predecessor.
With a 24.5MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor and the EXPEED 7 image processor—borrowed from Nikon’s flagship Z8 and Z9—the Z5 II offers improvements in autofocus, low-light performance, and shooting speed.
The Z5 II has an ISO range of 100-64,000 (expandable up to ISO 204,800 for photos), while the autofocus system relies on deep-learning AI to recognize and track up to nine subject types, including humans, animals, and vehicles. 3D tracking ensures that subjects remain sharp even in fast-paced scenes, and the newly introduced AF-A mode automatically switches between AF-S and AF-C based on subject movement. With detection down to -10EV.
The Z5 II offers continuous shooting at up to 14 frames per second with the mechanical shutter and up to 30 frames per second with the electronic shutter. The Pre-Release Capture mode further enhances action photography by buffering images up to one second before the shutter button is fully pressed. The shutter speed extends of up to 900 seconds (15 minutes) in manual exposure mode.
Stabilization is ensured by the 5-axis in-body vibration reduction system, that provides up to 7.5 stops of compensation. Additionally, Focus-Point VR tailors stabilization to the active AF point, ensuring sharp results even when the subject is near the frame’s edge.
For videographers, the Z5 II delivers uncropped 4K at 30p, with the option of 4K 60p at a 1.5x crop. Full HD recording extends to 120p for smooth slow-motion footage. The camera supports 12-bit N-RAW, 10-bit H.265, and 8-bit H.264 recording, marking it as the first Nikon model to record N-RAW directly onto an SD card. Additional video features include electronic Vibration Reduction, Hi-Res Zoom for lossless digital zoom when using prime lenses, and Product Review Mode for seamless focus transitions between a presenter and objects held up to the camera.
The Z5 II’s electronic viewfinder reaches up to 3,000 nits. The 3.2-inch vari-angle touchscreen LCD allows for flexible framing.
Dual UHS-II SD card slots offer good storage flexibility, while magnesium alloy construction ensures durability with resistance to dust and moisture.
Nikon has also enhanced creative controls with a dedicated Picture Control button, granting instant access to up to 31 built-in film-inspired presets and custom Imaging Recipes downloadable via Nikon’s Imaging Cloud. For those seeking ultra-high resolution, the Z5 II features Pixel Shift shooting, allowing for the creation of 96MP images through post-processing in Nikon’s Studio NX software.
Additional modern conveniences include UVC/UAC support for high-quality webcam streaming, headphone and microphone jacks for professional audio monitoring, and extended video recording times of up to two hours and five minutes.
The Nikon Z5 II will be available in April 2025 for $1,699.95. Kit configurations include the Nikkor Z 24-50mm f/4-6.3 lens for $1,999.95 and the NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR lens for $2,499.95.
