OWC Announces a 240GB CFe VPG 200 Rated Memory Card

OWC expanded their CFexpress Type A offerings today with the release of a new 240GB Pro card. Using the latest CFexpress 4.0 standard, OWC now provides three capacity options, all of which are VPG 200 rated and promise blazing fast peak performance.

OWC’s Pro series of memory cards is theoretically the second tier in terms of raw performance, trailing only the Ultra line. Ultra cards provide greater storage space and faster performance, but they come at a higher cost. Furthermore, OWC does not currently provide the Sony-specific Type A format in its Ultra series.

“Based on popular demand, this new capacity option combines the rocket-fast speeds users expect from OWC with a more accessible price point, making it the ideal choice for Sony users who require professional-grade performance without the need for maximum capacity,” the company states.

OWC’s pro cards are VPG certified, which means they meet Sony’s strict video capture requirements, ensuring that all video recording choices are available on Sony’s Alpha and FX-series cameras that use the compact card format. OWC expressly states that it is compatible with the a9 III, a1, a7S III, a7 IV, a7r V, FX3, FX6, FR7, and FX30, as well as CFexpress Type A memory card readers and reader slot-equipped devices.

OWC’s Pro CFexpress Type A card adheres to the 4.0 standard, which means that when connected to a computer (via a CFexpress 4.0 reader), it may achieve write speeds of up to 1,700 MB/s and read speeds of up to 1,850 MB/s while remaining backward compatible with CFexpress 2.0. The firm also provides a CFexpress Type A to Type B adapter that supports maximum speeds and is compatible with OWC’s Atlas USB-4 card reader.

OWC assures that the card will maintain at least 400 MB/s write rates, though the VPG 200 rating merely guarantees that it will never go below 200 MB/s. The Compact Flash Association’s VPG certification testing is quite severe, and regular OWC memory card users are unlikely to put the hardware through nearly as much stress. In summary, photographers and filmmakers should be confident in the card’s ability to shoot high-resolution, high-frame-rate video as well as capture and clear bursts of photographs.

OWC sells the 240GB capacity CFexpress Type A card for $200, in addition to the two additional larger capacity alternatives.
