Profoto Announced the Pro-B3 Portable Battery Strobe
Profoto has unveiled the Pro-B3, a 750W battery-powered flash that it claims is designed to meet the needs of the world’s greatest action and adventure photographers.
“The unique combination of features that the Pro-B3 brings ensures that you will always get that perfect shot,” says Göran Marén, Product Manager. “The Pro-B3 has been designed and built to withstand years and years of professional use.”
The Pro-B3 is more powerful than the previous B1X, raising the maximum strobe output from 500Ws to 750Ws and the continuous light output from 24W to 56W LEDs. That additional power, however, comes at a cost: despite the fact that the system’s battery (the Profoto Li-Ion battery 4S2P) has nearly double the capacity of the B1X battery (80.7Wh versus 44.4Wh), photographers will not be able to use as many flashes per charge. Because of the higher power demand, the Profoto Pro-B3 will only fire 250 full-power strobes before the battery dies, compared to 325 in the B1X.
However, Profoto believes the trade-off is worthwhile in exchange for better overall performance. In addition to the increased output, Profoto claims that the recycle time has improved overall: it now ranges between 0.01 and 2.3 seconds. The flash duration has significantly improved: the B1X had a low 1/19,000 second flash duration, whereas the new Pro-B3 has a shorter 1/75,000 second light length.
The Pro-B3 is compatible with the AirX trigger system and supports Sync, TTL, High-Speed Sync (HSS), and remote control (Air 1 and Air 2). Its wireless range is up to 1,000 feet (in ideal conditions). Profoto’s Camera and Control applications also control it. Without the battery, the Pro-B3 weighs 4.45 kg/7.6 pounds.
The Profoto Pro-B3 is available now for $3,995, or as a two-light kit for $7,895.
