RED Unveils a New KOMODO 6K Monochrome
RED Digital Cinema President and Co-Owner Jarred Land show off a monochromatic version of the company’s entry-level cinema camera. The RED KOMODO 6K Monochrome has the exact specifications as the ordinary model, but its sensor lacks a color filter array. RED has previously released monochrome versions of their top cameras, such as the DSMC2 Helium and Monstro 8K Monochrome systems. While it is always possible to convert a color image to black and white in post-production, shooting on a monochrome camera sensor from the start provides better overall image quality.
According to Jarred Land, the sensitivity of the Monochrome version is near twice that of the original KOMODO; hence the recommended ISO setting increases from 800 to 2000. Furthermore, the company provides a full-spectrum option that captures light beyond the visible spectrum and should provide even better sensitivity.
Here’s a quick rundown of the camera’s key features:
- 6K Super 35 mm Global Shutter CMOS sensor
- RF mount (compatible with the new RED RF to PL Adapter Pack for KOMODO)
- CFast 2.0 media
- Dual Canon BP Battery Slot
- 6K 17:9 at up to 40fps
- 4K 17:9 at up to 60fps
- REDCODE HQ, MQ, LQ (ELQ available in Beta 1.7.0. firmware)
- ProRes 422 and 422 HQ (up to 4K60p)
- IPP2 image processing pipeline
The new RED KOMODO 6K Monochrome isn’t officially mentioned on the company’s website, and it appears to be made only on request. While the basic model is present at $5,995, the monochromatic variant is $7,500 and will be delivered 1-2 weeks after placing the order.
