Reto Unveils the Kodak Ektar H35 Film Camera

Reto has announced a new Kodak-branded half-frame film camera, the Ektar H35, which makes two exposures per 35mm frame and is touted as either a way to reduce film costs by doubling the number of photos that can be taken per roll or as an artistic tool to make dual image compositions. The half-frame design uses a typical 36 x 24mm film frame to capture two vertical 18 x 24mm frames.

“There are various ways to pair the frames. For instance, you can take a close-up and a wide shot of the same environment, or film the same subject at two different times,” the company says.

Produced by Reto, the Ektar H35 half-frame film camera is officially licensed by Eastman Kodak and is the second product the company has produced under the Kodak brand — in 2020, Reto produced a set of 1970s-inspired metal film cases. The lens is a 22mm f/9.5 prime with two elements. It’s listed as being made using ‘optical grade acrylic.’ The shutter speed is 1/100s. The camera’s controls are simple, with only a shutter release, manual wind and rewind gear, and flash control. The camera weighs 100g and its dimensions are 110 x 62 x 39mm. A single AAA battery powers the camera.

The shooting style of half-frame photography is the opposite of what photographers are typically used to. Instead of getting a landscape-oriented photo when shooting horizontally, the camera will produce a portrait orientation photo since it is using half of a 35mm film frame. To get a landscape orientation photo, the camera has to be held in portrait orientation.

The Reto Ektar H35 is available in four colorways: sand (tan), sage (green), brown and black. The camera is $49.99 and will begin shipping in June.
