Sabrent Releases a New 1TB V60 SD Card

In a rare combination of speed and capacity, Sabrent has unveiled a new 1TB capacity option for its V60 SD card series. Sabrent joins Angelbird as the sole provider of a V60, UHS-II card with a 1TB capacity. While the company boasts its new card controller, along with 112-Layer BiCS5 TLC, allows for a 270 MB/s read speed and says that it has up to 170 MB/s write rates, the card is only verified to satisfy the V60 standard, which indicates that it can only maintain write speeds of 60 MB/s (if it could sustain 170 MB/s, it would be rated as a V90 card).

“These cards meet the V60 standard, exceeding UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) requirements. They also meet A1 Application Performance Class specifications for guaranteed 1500/500 Read/Write IOPS. Flexible performance for your content creation.”

Even if the card’s maximum transfer rate is just 60 MB/s, this is still an improvement over the market’s other high-capacity SD cards, of which only one—Angelbird—can compete. While SD cards from Delkin, SanDisk, PNY, and Lexar all have a 1TB capacity, their top speeds are V30. V30 isn’t sufficient for high-resolution video capture in 8K or frequently even 4K, although being possibly adequate for photos, as the data rates frequently outpace the cards’ write speeds, particularly with more recent mirrorless cameras that write with higher bitrates.

While many photographers cringe at relying on a single high-capacity memory card rather than a collection of smaller-capacity cards to avoid card failure, video shooters don’t have that luxury. Workflows in 4K and 8K quickly fill cards, and the latter is particularly difficult to use with cards smaller than 512GB. They were satisfied with the 1TB card.

Angelbird used to be the only game in town, but Sabrent’s entry has a strong case for being considered. The Sabrent card is $30 less expensive at $270 and promises a little quicker read speed (270 MB/s compared to Angelbird’s 260 MB/s). The new 1TB V60 SD card is now readily available, albeit it seems like there is a limited supply. The three-year guarantee from Sabrent covers the cards.
