Samyang Announces 14-24mm f/2.8 Zoom Lens in Collaboration with Schneider-Kreuznach
Samyang has officially announced the AF 14-24mm f/2.8 FE lens, the company’s first super-wide-angle zoom lens for full frame E-mount cameras, developed in collaboration with German optics expert Schneider-Kreuznach.
“This new lens represents a remarkable partnership between two optical pioneers from South Korea and Germany, resulting in a significant product for the mirrorless market,” Samyang says.
The lens covers a focal range from 14mm to 24mm, providing a wide angle of view from 114.2 degrees at the short end to 84.1 degrees at the long end making it “ideal for landscapes, cityscapes, nightscapes, astrophotography, architecture, interiors, and environmental portraits. Designed to accommodate different shooting styles, this lens enables creative expression in every frame”, as the South Korean company claims. Samyang presents the lens as “significantly lighter than any other full-frame zoom lens available”: the 445 grams of weight and the 89mm in length when retracted (extending slightly during zoom) indeed make the AF 14-24mm f/2.8 a compact and easy-to-carry product.
Optically, the lens is constructed with 15 elements in 11 groups. This includes three aspherical elements, five high-refractive lenses, and three extra-low dispersion elements, all treated with Samyang’s Ultra Multi-Coating (UMC) to reduce flare and ghosting. It features a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture, a nine-blade diaphragm, and supports a minimum focusing distance of just 0.18 meters.
On their website, Samyang describes the AF 14-24mm as “the world’s first ultra-wide zoom lens that allows for attachment of front filters”. The lens in fact is compatible with standard 77mm front filters—an uncommon feature for this class of lenses—catering to photographers who often use polarizers and ND filters. The lens also includes a customizable button and a linear stepping motor for smooth autofocus. Additionally, a USB-C port is integrated for straightforward firmware updates.
Though Samyang and Schneider-Kreuznach have described the lens as a collaborative development, specific details about their working relationship remain undisclosed. However, Schneider-Kreuznach has previously licensed its name for use in optics sold under other brands, such as select Pentax lenses for Samsung DSLRs.
