Samyang Introduces the First and Widest RF-Mount Third-party AF Lens: 14mm f/2.8
Samyang, also known as Rokinon in some markets, has today announced the first third-party autofocus lens for Canon RF mount, the Samyang AF 14mm f/2.8 RF. It is also the widest autofocus lens available for the RF mount, as the Samyang AF 14mm f/2.8 RF is a millimeter wider than Canon’s wide-angle 15-35mm L-series lens. This makes it both the widest AF lens and the widest AF prime lens for the EOS R, as well as the first not made made by Canon.
“The world’s first AF 14mm f/2.8 for RF mount is designed for users to enjoy a broader perspective in mirrorless cameras. The compact lens design dedicated to mirrorless cameras is packed with 113.9 degrees of broad angle of view and fast and precise autofocus function,” says the manufacturer.
Inside, the lens is pretty much identical to the E-Mount version of this same optic. The design uses 14 elements in 10 groups, including 3 aspherical elements, 1 high reflective element, and 2 extra-low dispersion elements to “effectively adjust the light flow and reduce the aberration’ and ensure a high-quality image from corner to corner. As a final flourish, there’s also a rear filter holder, since you won’t be able to use screw-on filters.
Landscape photographers might be a little disappointed, though if they can’t attach their favorite polarisers and ND grads to it.
The Canon RF version comes in at a hair heavier than the 505g Sony E Mount version, and its body is also weather-sealed to protect it from dust and moisture.

The AF 14mm f/2.8 uses a 7-blade aperture for circular booked. Other features include a new Lens Station that allows you to update the lens’s firmware via USB.
The lack of native wide-angle lenses has been a bit of a weakness of the Canon RF lens roadmap, with the pricey Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM thus far the only autofocus option. Between its existing manual and this new autofocus 14mm f/2.8, that hole looks to have been plugged.
The Samyang/Rokinon AF 14mm f/2.8 RF lens will be available worldwide in November, and while Samyang didn’t mention a price in its press release, we expect it to be priced similarly to the E-Mount version, which is currently selling for $600.
