Sandmarc Unveils the Carbon Fiber Tripod Made for iPhone Photographers
Sandmarc’s new carbon fiber tripod is the latest evidence of the company’s commitment to smartphone photography, as it is expressly built for use with the iPhone. The company sells a range of products geared specifically toward the iPhone, including sliders, lenses, and filters. Sandmarc currently has two other compact tripods aimed at iPhone photographers, but this new addition is the first to employ carbon fiber, which reduces its weight from 2.63 pounds to 2.28 pounds.
Photography equipment as ubiquitous as a tripod can’t be adjusted much to suit a smartphone versus a full-size camera. Sandmarc hasn’t done anything to tweak it specifically for an iPhone. It emphasizes those mobile-centric promises primarily by including a smartphone attachment that slots into the Arca-Swiss-style ball head.
Despite targeting what most photographers consider the low end of the market, the tripod does not appear to cut costs. It is built of carbon fiber to be lightweight and portable and collapses to 15.35 inches long. The tripod stands 64.4 inches tall when completely opened.
“A fully equipped and industrially built tripod made for iPhone,” Sandmarc describes. “Quick adjustability and a pro-level ball head for portrait and landscape orientation. A seamless experience when shooting with your iPhone.”
While branded and sold as an iPhone tripod, there isn’t anything stopping a photographer from using it with a standard camera due to its 13.23-pound maximum capacity. That is significantly more than most camera packages weigh, implying that the tripod should be extremely sturdy. Sandmarc lists the majority of DSLR and mirrorless cameras as supported at the bottom of its compatibility list, along with GoPros and almost every iPhone since the iPhone 4. There appears to be no reason why the tripod mount would not also function with most Android-based cellphones.
The supplied ball head enables typical camera articulation, including portrait and landscape configurations for an attached smartphone or full-size camera.
Each of the three carbon fiber legs is made up of three parts held together by normal twisting locks, and the center shaft is also made of carbon fiber and can be raised and lowered using a similar twist lock.
The Sandmarc Carbon-Edition iPhone tripod is presently on pre-order for $300. According to the company, it plans to begin distributing devices in March.
